Changeover Saturday: the busiest day of the season
In the French Alps, the classic ski week runs Saturday to Saturday. Every winter Saturday, tens of thousands of travellers leave and join the resorts on the same day, with a peak between 9am and 5pm on the Geneva–Moûtiers and Lyon–Albertville corridors.
On that day, full shuttles, sold-out rental cars and saturated roads combine. A private transfer booked ahead removes these risks: your chauffeur waits for you, the route is planned, and your schedule is matched to your flight.
The 5 moments when early booking matters most
1. Changeover Saturdays (December to April): demand explodes, and V-Class vehicles go first.
2. French and British school holidays: mid-February weeks concentrate the highest demand.
3. Group arrivals: several vehicles or a Sprinter require planning, never last-minute rushes.
4. Early-morning or late-evening flights: 24/7 availability is best confirmed weeks ahead.
5. Forecasted snowfall: winter tyres, chains and alternative routes are prepared in advance.
Which airport should you fly into?
- Geneva (GVA): the main gateway to the 3 Valleys. Allow around 2h30 to Courchevel or Méribel — longer on busy Saturdays.
- Lyon Saint-Exupéry (LYS): convenient for long-haul flights, roughly 2h30–2h45 to Courchevel.
- Chambery (CMF): closest to the Savoie resorts, about 1h30 — but limited Saturday flight coverage.
- Grenoble (GNB): popular with European flights, around 2h to the heart of the Northern Alps.
