Ski Luggage: Packing for Your Alpine Transfer
Skis, snowboards, suitcases: how everything fits in a 7-passenger Mercedes V-Class. Packing tips and airline rules explained.

Skis, Suitcases, Snowboards: Packing for Your Transfer
How much luggage can you bring on a transfer to Courchevel? In a 7-passenger Mercedes V-Class you get two large rear holds plus interior boot space: up to 7 cabin bags, 2 large suitcases, 6 pairs of skis or 4 snowboards — all with no extra charge, since skis and snowboards are included.
Packing well is what makes a transfer from Geneva, Lyon or Chambery to your chalet effortless. Here is our method, tested every single season.
The space in a Mercedes V-Class
The V-Class is the reference vehicle for family alpine transfers. Concretely:
| Configuration | Passengers | Typical luggage |
|---|---|---|
| 7 passengers | 7 adults | 7 cabin bags + 2 pairs of skis |
| 6 passengers | 6 adults | 6 medium suitcases + 4 pairs of skis |
| 4 passengers | family + kids | 4 large suitcases + child seat + 6 skis |
Loading happens at the rear (skis laid diagonally) and through the side door. Your chauffeur handles everything: you only point out which bag must stay reachable (see below).
Airline rules for skis
Before the transfer, it is the flight that sets the limits. Most major airlines flying into Geneva accept a ski or snowboard bag within your checked allowance (often replacing a suitcase, sometimes with a small “equipment” fee). Three good habits:
1. Check your airline’s “sports equipment” policy before booking.
2. Pair two sets of skis in one double bag to save an allowance.
3. Point bindings inwards and protect edges with cardboard.
The strategic cabin bag
A chauffeur’s tip: keep a small bag inside the cabin with everything you will need before reaching the chalet — sunglasses, sunscreen, a layer for the kids, medication, the chalet contact details. Suitcases in the rear hold are only accessible on arrival; this one stays at your feet.
Transfer day: how it unfolds
- At the airport: your chauffeur waits at the baggage exit with a name board, grabs a trolley, loads everything and walks you to the vehicle.
- Loading: skis and snowboards first, suitcases next, cabin bags inside the cabin. Water on board, child seats pre-fitted on request.
- On the road: about 2h30 from Geneva, 1h30 from Chambery, 2h30 to 3h from Lyon. Safe mountain driving, snow chains carried in winter.
- On arrival: unloading right outside your chalet or hotel, help to the ski room if you wish.
